Is the cabinet moisture resistant? Can it stand in a bathroom or cellar?
Yes, Wastoren® washing machine cabinets are moisture resistant and can be installed perfectly well in a bathroom, utility room or cellar. It is important, though, that the room is well ventilated, so moisture cannot build up over long periods.
The cabinets are designed for rooms in which a washing machine and dryer are used. Thanks to the high-grade materials and finish they stand up well to the normal humidity that comes with that.
Do bear in mind that the cabinets are not completely waterproof. So avoid the cabinet being in direct contact with water for long periods, or being installed in a room where there is constant condensation or standing moisture.
On top of that, every Wastoren® base cabinet comes with a metal base plate as standard. This protects the cabinet against moisture if water should ever leak from the washing machine, so the water does not come into direct contact with the wood.
What does good ventilation mean?
By good ventilation we mean:
an open window, or
mechanical ventilation (extraction) combined with an open window.
What matters is that moisture can escape and does not build up in the room. Preferably ventilate for at least 15 minutes after showering and keep the humidity below 70% on average. As long as the cabinet is not permanently in a wet or steamy environment, it will stay in good condition.
Bathroom versus cellar
A bathroom has temporarily high humidity and temperature swings from showering and bathing. The cabinet is suitable for this as long as there is good ventilation and it does not stand directly next to the shower or bath; preferably keep some distance to avoid splashes. A cellar often has constantly higher humidity. That is harder on the cabinet: only install it in a well-ventilated cellar where the humidity stays below 70%, and not directly against a cold external wall.
Preventing moisture damage
Prolonged exposure to high humidity without good ventilation can cause the material to warp or swell, or the finish to come away. In extreme cases mould forms. Would you still like to put the cabinet in a slightly damper room? Then keep a few centimetres from the wall for air circulation, consider a dehumidifier and leave the doors open now and then.
Installing in a bathroom or cellar
So the cabinet can stand perfectly well in a bathroom or cellar, as long as the room is sufficiently ventilated. Not sure whether your room is suitable? Then feel free to request personal advice or take a look at our washing machine cabinets.
